The sixth leg of the Volvo Ocean Race began last April 19. The crowd cheered as the boats left Brazil in good weather conditions.
At the onset of the race, an in-land course of 5 laps had to be completed. However, due to the almost non-existent wind, the Race Committee agreed to reduce this to just one lap and proceed off-shore. SCA and Alvimedica were initially leading. MAPFRE slowly came back from behind, fighting hard into second place at the mark. Alvimedica, the Turkish-American team, left Brazil as leaders en route to Newport.
